U.S. CENSUS WORKS WITH CAREER CENTERS TO HIRE LOCALS

Since October 2008, the U.S Census Bureau has been working closely with the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) and the Greater New Bedford and Wareham Career Centers to fill close to 500 local positions.

The Career Centers continue to help the Census Bureau in recruiting and filling of temporary Census Taker, Field Operations Supervisor and Recruiting Assistant positions.

Census Takers will work within their community conducting interviews with respondents and explaining the purpose of the Census.

Field Operations Supervisors are responsible for instructing a large, decentralized field staff engaged in enumerating households within an established time schedule.

Recruiting Assistants perform recruiting activities to ensure there is a sufficient pool of qualified applicants for temporary employment.

These positions allow candidates to work within their community and receive excellent pay, flexible hours, paid training, and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses.

“We chose to seek the help of the Career Center because of their great reputation for helping, and their highly skilled and reliable employee pool” noted J. Michael Tholl, Early Local Census Manager at the U.S. Department of Commerce, Census Bureau.

The Census is used in distributing hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding to states and localities for public programs in education, community health care, public transportation, housing, and other areas. These Census jobs play a vital role in making sure that everyone is counted in the 2010 Census to ensure proper funding.
