Excellent Day for GED Grads NEW BEDFORD - November 16, 2007 will be remembered by some local students, teachers, friends and families as one excellent day, as Training Resources of America (TRA) held its first GED graduation ceremony. Barbora Hazuková, TRA Regional Manager commented, “Because people get their GED at different times (not as a group) it’s not common to have graduation ceremonies. The staff has really done an excellent job of bringing together this special event.” Although not all 22 of the TRA ACHIEVE! Youth Opportunity Program graduates were able to attend, those who did received a certificate and a graduation cap with tassels to remember the day. Hazuková noted, “ Ultimately, our goals are to help the youth get jobs, get their GEDs, and teach them essential computer skills.” She added, “Thirteen of our graduates have already found work and/or have gone onto post-secondary education.” For those who still need help, TRA works with companies, recommending youth that they think are a good fit for certain jobs. Help with resume writing and printing is also available. “We also work very closely with the Career Center and New Directions to find them jobs and connect them with other services,” she explains. Training Resources of America, Inc. With WIA youth funding through the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, TRA offers the ACHIEVE! Youth Opportunity Program for out-of-school youth between the ages of 16 and 21. TRA-New Bedford also receives funding from the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance to operate an education and training program for Food Stamp recipients. Both programs empower participants by helping them to increase their grade levels and/or English speaking capabilities, get their GEDs, and learn essential workplace skills. According to student Jade Scott, “If you’re a person that wants to succeed in something, coming to TRA is the way for yourself and your future!” Hazuková added, “Helping disadvantaged youth and adults improve the quality of their lives is only part of TRA’s mission. TRA also helps employers to strengthen and maintain a vitalized workforce by delivering more prepared, educated and work-ready employees. It also helps Workforce Investment Boards to achieve their employment and training goals in an optimal time frame by providing diverse, customized and high quality workforce development services.” TRA is a private, non-profit organization that provides education, employment, training, and workforce development services in Massachusetts, Texas, and other parts of the USA. Founded in 1975, TRA is headquartered in Worcester, Massachusetts, with one of its locations at 56-58 Spring St., New Bedford.
