Workforce Development Professionals Develop Networking Forum in Southeast Massachusetts

In May, 2007, 35 workforce development professionals gathered at Bridgewater State College for the first Southeast Network meeting. This meeting officially launched Regional Networking in Southeast Massachusetts. A second meeting was held in late September, with a third scheduled for January 25, 2008. The Commonwealth Workforce Coalition (CWC) convenes Regional Networks in Boston, Western, and Southeast Massachusetts. Meetings in Central and Northeast Massachusetts are scheduled for January 2008.

Regional Networking offers a forum for workforce development staff (those working with adults or youth in education, training and employment programs) to share experiences, discuss-on-the job challenges, learn from peers, build contacts and find support for their work. The discussion topics and format for the meetings are determined by meeting participants. CWC provides logistical support and assistance to a group of organizers in each region. The Southeast region is headed by a spirited group of organizers from The Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, LifeStream, SABES, CareerWorks and New Directions Southcoast, Inc. Past regional Network meetings have focused on issues related to effective strategies for working with employers and issues related to CORI and employment. Evaluations from meeting participants rate the meetings as an effective and valuable way to get to know their colleagues and share information about programs, activities and professional development opportunities. For some participants, new employer contacts have been made, while others have increased cross-program referrals!

Those interested in attending the next Southeast Network meeting on January 25th at Bridgewater State College should contact Judith Lorei at JLorei@cedac.org or 617-834-2594 or go to the Commonwealth Workforce Coalition website at cwc.CEDAC.org. There is no charge for the meeting and it is open to all workforce development professionals. Pre-registration is required.
