WIB Strategic Planning On Track

NEW BEDFORD – While many are preparing for the holidays, the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB), continues its focus on developing measures it expects to use for years to come. The measures are specific to three main goals that represent a total of twelve objectives found within the board’s strategic plan that was developed last summer.

The task of breaking down each objective has been assigned to a special working group of the board. This process has proven both challenging and educational for members of the group. “We’re already seeing the fruit of this effort,” explains Len Coriaty, Executive Director/CEO. “The group has completed the measures for the first goal and expects to see measures for the other goals completed by the end of December 2008.”

Not only does the strategic plan serve as the framework for discussion and decision making at the board, it is an essential component of the State’s requirements to be certified as “high performing”. After receiving feedback from the State on an initial, unsuccessful application last September, the board plans to resubmit an application for the second round due March 2, 2009.

“We’ve taken the feedback from the state seriously. It’s been very helpful,” says Board Chair Dave DeJesus. “This isn’t about getting a certificate or an award, it’s about doing what’s best for our region, and we’re going to take the necessary time and do it well.”

Time consuming and challenging are a couple words that come to mind as the board has moved through this exercise. “We have a long way to go and the expectation of the working group is that we may not be where we need to be in March,” says DeJesus. “Still, there’s merit in pursuing it whether we get it this time or not. At a minimum, we’ll get a pulse from the State as to where we are.”

In the event the board needs to file a third application, the State has set a tentative due date in September, 2009.
