SOUTHCOAST MEDIA GROUP HONORED WITH CHAMBER’S 2009 EDUCATION LEADERSHIP AWARD

NEW BEDFORD -- SouthCoast Media Group was recognized with the 2009 SouthCoast Education Leadership Award by the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce during the Chamber’s 123rd Annual Meeting & Business Luncheon on November 19, 2009.

This award recognizes one business or organization each year that has demonstrated a long-term commitment to improving education opportunities for students in the South Coast region. The recipient of the award is selected by a committee from the Chamber’s Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership.

SouthCoast Media Group was selected for the prestigious award for its long history of investing in the community through educational partnerships that help secure the future of the region’s youth.

These partnerships have included the sponsorship of a “News in Education” program that provides local schools with newspapers and other teaching materials as well as innovative teacher training programs which provide educators with various methods of using the newspaper as an educational resource.

Every year, high school interns from the Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership have had the opportunity to work at SouthCoast Media Group in all aspects of journalism from helping to write columns for the paper and assisting with photography, editing, marketing and graphic design. One student intern was even invited to be present while the votes were being tallied during the 2008 presidential election to understand what goes on inside a media organization during a national event.

Their commitment to education has also included special education themed editorial pages in their publications such as the Tuesday Education Page, the “Class Acts” page to showcase the good things going on in South Coast classrooms, and an online education page which continues to grow in popularity. This is in addition to their coverage of a variety of “hard news” education stories, trends, breaking news, and local coverage of school based sports and arts programs.

They have also co-sponsored a Teacher of the Year award, dedicated significant space on their website and in their newspapers to promote the school based mentoring program SMILES, and most recently hosted a forum on early-education.

SouthCoast Media Group is a division of Dow Jones Local Media Group and publishes the largest daily newspaper in the region The Standard-Times and five South Coast weeklies; Advocate; Chronicle; Middleboro Gazette; Spectator; Fall River Spirit; and the New England Business Bulletin.

The New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce is a private, non-profit business association based in the City of New Bedford, MA. Chartered in 1885, the Chamber serves nearly 1,000 member businesses of all sizes from virtually all industries in the ten communities of New Bedford, Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Freetown, Mattapoisett, Marion, Rochester, Wareham, and Westport. The Chamber supports and promotes the local business community through leadership in public advocacy, education, networking, information, and community development.
