Tens Ingles?                              GOT ENGLISH?                             Tienes Ingles?

NEW BEDFORD - The New Bedford Free Public Library is pleased to offer free adult conversation circles at Casa da Saudade and at Howland Green Library, starting at the end of February, thanks to a generous grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. This program, pursued by the City of New Bedford and strongly endorsed and supported by the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, represents a fun and productive opportunity for New Bedford residents who wish to build their English skills. Sessions are enrolling now and will be facilitated by volunteers.

The eight-week sessions are designed to encourage discussion and improve speaking skills. There will be supplemental learning materials available, such as books, DVDs and CDs, for participants who wish to practice independently. All sessions will run for about an hour and will provide an informal, smaller group setting to practice the English language skills needed in a variety of everyday settings.

The Health session will cover making a doctor’s appointment and a pharmacy visit. Healthy Living conversations will address the names of medications, healthy habits, parts of the body, and how to describe an illness. Other units will give participants an opportunity to talk about their jobs, describe their duties, identify signage, and other basic information about employment. The food session will cover the names of food items, quantities, food preferences, and making a shopping list. Talking about bus routes, addresses and locations, giving and following directions, counting money, describing clothing, and sharing personal information will be covered in other sessions.

Anyone wishing to participate or volunteer for GOT ENGLISH is encouraged to contact Judy Downey or Philomene Tavares at 508-991-6218. Session times and dates have not yet been finalized, but input from potential participants will be welcomed.
