Joanne Goldstein Sworn in as New Labor Secretary

On Tuesday, January 26th, former utility workers union attorney Joanne Goldstein, a top aide to Attorney General Martha Coakley, was sworn into office as the state’s new labor secretary. She takes over for interim Secretary Nancy Snyder, who took the post when Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Suzanne Bump stepped down.

Governor Deval Patrick announced Goldstein’s new position in late December. Goldstein joins the Governor’s cabinet after serving since 2007 as chief of the Attorney General’s Fair Labor Division.

“Joanne has spent years advocating on behalf of working families in the Commonwealth and across the nation to ensure that their rights are protected on the job,” said Governor Patrick. “At this critical time for our workforce, Joanne’s experience in working with labor unions and employers alike will be a tremendous asset to our cabinet, and I am thrilled to welcome her on board. I also want to express my gratitude to Nancy Snyder, who in short time has made an exceptional contribution to our efforts on behalf of Massachusetts workers.”

“I am deeply honored to serve in the Governor’s cabinet to ensure that all of our workers, as well as the unemployed and under-employed, are given every resource possible to support their families and reach their full potential in the days to come,” said Goldstein. “I look forward to building upon the efforts of the Patrick-Murray Administration to support a vibrant and strong workforce system in Massachusetts, with a concentration on strengthening regional economies and bridging the skills gap.”
