Community acknowledges early literacy needs for the region

December 23, 2009 12:00 AM

DARTMOUTH — Many came out to the North Dartmouth Barnes & Noble on December 16 to help raise funds to provide access to books for local children.

The Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) sponsored the Barnes & Noble Bookfair fundraiser to benefit the Community Foundation's Greater New Bedford Early Literacy Consortium (ELC).

Barnes & Noble donated a percentage of every sale made with Bookfair Vouchers from the ELC. These funds will be used by the ELC to purchase books to include in gifts bags for new moms at local area hospitals. This is a part of an early literacy campaign to help local children from birth to first grade gain access to books, reading and writing.

There were some famous faces in attendance at the bookfair to take part in the "Dress Like Your Favorite Story Book Character" costume contest, including The Cat in the Hat, Tiger Lilly and Ebenezer Scrooge. Prizes were awarded to participants.

Locals also participated in story time readings by WIB staff, department of community services staff, and special guest reader reigning Miss New Bedford, Ashley Hebert.
