Opportunities Abound at Youth Expo

On April 25, 2008, the Greater New Bedford Career Center hosted the fourth annual Youth Expo. In all, 19 employers advertised and were present to begin filling any of the 120 jobs they had available. The event was kicked off by the State Attorney General, Martha Coakley, who together with Mayor Lang, emphasized the importance and need for summer jobs and activities for the youth in our area.

Organized by the Youth Department of New Directions, the event provided interview opportunities for more than 200 youth ages 16 and up. Several of the youth had attended Career Center workshops to prepare them for the Expo and employers were impressed with their work readiness skills as demonstrated by quality resumes, appropriate dress and interviewing skills. The feedback from the participants of the Expo, both youth and employers, was very positive and many youth will be hired as a result. The event also drew local support in sponsorship from the Office of the Bristol County District Attorney, New Bedford Ward 2 City Councilor, Steven Martins, and Joseph Abboud Manufacturing Corporation.

During the Expo, names were also collected from 14 and 15 year olds who will be signed up for the Mayor’s Summer Stipend program that will begin in July. New Directions, the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board and the Mayor’s office will continue to reach out to local employers for job pledges or donations to support these summer youth activities.
