Success Story Begins at Career Center

There are success stories and there are some remarkable success stories. One is right here at the Greater New Bedford Career Center. Lisa Martin was an unemployed single mom with no transportation. Seeking assistance she was referred to a job search program and was assigned to Donna Balut for job search assistance. She was, at that time, volunteering as a tutor at New Directions outreach Business and Industry Center in the far north end of New Bedford to help John Afonso and Carol Weller in the GED program. Her dedication became apparent with her willingness to walk to and from work before getting a vehicle and did this volunteer work for almost a year while doing extensive job search with Donna. Finally, a position was available at New Directions and Donna made her aware of it. Lisa applied, was interviewed and got hired in November of 2005 as a Job Specialist. She worked on the fishing grant for a brief time at the Business and Industry Center before working full time as a Job Specialist at the Career Center. Her ability, attention to detail and determination to help those in need were reasons why in November of 2006, she was asked if she wanted to work on the Work Certified Program grant with Patricia Garcia. Working with Patricia for about 7 months she learned the job inside and out. In June 2007 she was promoted to the Program Coordinator position where she became responsible for additional duties such as reporting, recruiting candidates, job developing, and acting as liaison between her participants and the employer community. She has done an outstanding job exceeding the number of placements that were originally in the contract by more than 200%.

Along with those duties, she now is working as Program Assistant on the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund Manufacturing grant, again working with Patricia Garcia, where she has been able to transfer several skills from her previous positions. As a side-note, Lisa has written and published 3 novels on the web. Her first book “Battered & Betrayed” is available at Publishamerica.com and “Shadow Lake Terror” and “Death’s Keeper” are available at lulu.com. Lisa’s work ethic is well known by her clients, peers and fans; proof positive that perseverance and hard work do pay off. We are extremely proud of her and all that she has accomplished. We know she is destined for greater things.
