The state's unemployment rate was up from a revised figure of 5 percent in July. New Bedford’s unemployment rate was 8.3 % in July, unadjusted for seasonal change. The national unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in August, up from 5.7 percent the previous month. The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development said Thursday that the state's labor force declined by 4,100 people in August. But the state also reported it added 1,700 jobs that month, with the leisure and hospitality sector accounting for 800 new jobs. The jobs number and the unemployment rate sometimes move in opposite directions because they rely on different survey methods. 227 Union Street, Suite 206, New Bedford, MA 02740-5946 PH 508.979.1504 FAX 508.979.5680 E-mail: Webmaster@gnbwib.org |
