State Sets Bar for High Performing Board Status

Over the summer, the WIB worked diligently to develop responses and other supporting evidence, including the development of its Strategic Plan, to meet the State of Massachusetts criteria for High Performing Boards. Although the application deadline of September 10, 2008 was met, the WIB recently received notice that the application did not score well enough to advance in this round.

There are 16 WIBs in Massachusetts, of which eight WIBs submitted applications in this first of three rounds. Only two of the eight WIBs will advance to the final phase of the approval process. “This is not a bad thing,” remarks Len Coriaty, WIB Executive Director/CEO. “We look forward to seeing the reviewers’ comments and improving the application for the next round. Most of the work is done.”

Upon successful approval of the application, the WIB will receive a one-time award of $100,000. “The $100K is nice, but it is not the goal of this process,” says Coriaty. “High Performing Board status requires you meet strict criteria and provided tremendous evidence that strategy, operations, performance measurement and revenue are top-notch. When you achieve this status, you know your organization is running on all cylinders.”

It’s anticipated that the submission deadline for the second round will be sometime within the first months of 2009. “We’re still moving forward with our strategic plan and engaging WIB members and other stakeholders in its implementation. Our application can only get better for the second round,” says Coriaty.
