GNBWIB Recognized By Family Center at Annual Awards Banquet

FALL RIVER – At a festive, “luau”-themed awards ceremony held by the Family Center of New Bedford, the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) was presented with the Dr. E. Bradford Weaver Service Award in recognition of the WIB’s “outstanding commitment and contribution to the community, families, and children of the Family Center in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Annmarie Sawyer, Family Center Coordinator, presented the award to Jason Wentworth, LiteracyWorks Entrepreneur, who accepted on behalf of the WIB.

Ms. Sawyer made specific mention of the assistance provided by the WIB’s Jean Fox, Youth Council Director, and Craig Baker, Chief Operations Officer, who jumped into action and helped sustain the program when a major funding opportunity failed to materialize. “These families…this program would not be here if it wasn’t for the hard work of the WIB and we thank you,” said Ms. Sawyer.

“The WIB will continue to support the Family Center wholeheartedly,” said Mr. Wentworth. Ms. Fox, who reached out to the Family Center initially in her previous role of LiteracyWorks Entrepreneur, also applauded the work of the Family Center and its intergenerational approach. “Packaging and providing Early Literacy and ESOL services to child and parent simultaneously makes the Family Center a model for service providers not just for their innovative approaches but also their demonstrable favorable outcomes,” Ms. Fox said. She added that parenting workshops and home visits help to complement the educational message by providing a more relevant context and generate an increasing level of community engagement and civic awareness. The Family Center also assists families in building “home libraries” and delivers a new book during every home visit.

The Family Center is based in the Hayden-McFadden School at 361 Cedar Grove Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts, 02746. For more information, contact Annmarie Sawyer, Family Center Coordinator, at 508-979-1927 or contact Jason Wentworth, LiteracyWorks Entrepreneur, at 508-979-1504, extension 13.
