Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) is pleased to announce that Maria O. Pinarreta, Vice President of Branch Administration at BankFive, has accepted the position of co-Chair of the LiteracyWorks Cabinet. Ms. Pinarreta will join current Chair Roy Nascimento, President of the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, in this leadership role. “I am pleased that Maria will be co-Chairing the LiteracyWorks Cabinet with me, ” said Mr. Nascimento. He went on to say, “Her professional experience and impressive background make her well respected across the SouthCoast. I look forward to working with her on advocating for adult and family literacy in the New Bedford area.”

LiteracyWorks is a program of the WIB started in 2007 and tasked to aid, support, and build awareness for Adult Basic Education (ABE), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and literacy programs in the region. The LiteracyWorks Cabinet is the program’s advisory panel; which consists of local business leaders, education, and the community at large. Jason Wentworth, LiteracyWorks Entrepreneur, heralded the appointment of Ms. Pinarreta stating, “Maria is a perfect example of the positive impact that can be attained by making education accessible for all. With Maria and Roy as co-Chairs, LiteracyWorks is poised to continue its growth and increase its ability to provide critical support to service providers throughout Greater New Bedford.”

Ms. Pinarreta has been in Banking for over 35 years. Her extensive community involvement includes participation on both the Executive Committee and Finance and Performance Measurement Committee of the WIB. She is also the WIB’s Vice Chair, a member of the Capital Campaign Steering Committee for YWCA Southeastern Massachusetts, and an Advisory Board Member for the New Bedford Public Schools Division of Adult/Continuing Education & Summer School. Ms. Pinarreta explained she is committed to being an agent of positive change and a champion of ABE, ESOL, and literacy services in the City stating, "I like to think that we can make a difference. Therefore, I am honored to be a part of LiteracyWorks and to have the opportunity to work with Roy and the Cabinet."
